TEXAS HOMEOWNER FIELD GUIDE

Document possible hail damage safely

Start with what you can observe from a safe location. Leave roof access to a qualified professional.

Record observations, not conclusions

Photograph visible changes to gutters, downspouts, screens, siding, windows, and interior ceilings. Include wide views for context and close views for detail. Record when you noticed each condition and any previous repairs. Dents or marks alone do not establish their cause or the scope of needed repairs.

Preserve the record

Keep original photo files. Put annotations in a copy, and label estimated dates as estimates. Ask an inspector to distinguish storm-related findings from wear, installation issues, and pre-existing conditions.

Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage when safe, keep receipts, and coordinate disposal of damaged materials with your insurer.

Use weather records as context

A reported event nearby can help build a chronology. It cannot prove that hail reached your roof or that a particular defect is insured damage.
